ReHLDS is the result of reverse engineering the original HLDS (build 6152/6153) using the DWARF debug information embedded in the Linux build of HLDS (engine_i486.so). Along the way, the project's maintainers and contributors found and fixed a large number of defects and potential bugs in the original engine. It is maintained by the ReHLDS community as a non-commercial, open-source project.

License

ReHLDS is distributed under the MIT License.

The project was originally released under GPLv3 and transitioned to the MIT License in July 2025, with the explicit agreement of its major contributors, including dreamstalker, s1lent, WPMGPRoSToTeMa, Lev, and wopox. All prior contributions are considered licensed under the MIT License unless otherwise noted. See LICENSE-TRANSITION.md for the full notice.

Valve, Half-Life, Counter-Strike, and related names and assets belong to their respective owners. ReHLDS does not include the commercial game data required to run a server — you still need a legitimately obtained copy of HLDS and the relevant mod.

How to help

Run ReHLDS on your game server and report any problems you encounter through the issue tracker — see Troubleshooting for what to include in a report. Pull requests are also welcome.
